Stewardship at St. Peter’s

I have been at St. Peter’s for a year now. Most of that time I have spent listening to present and past members of St. Peter’s share their stories with me and talk about their present and future hopes for our church. One thing that I have most often heard is how difficult the years of transition during and following the global pandemic have been at St. Peter’s–with heroic efforts from key volunteers to keep the church operating without the stable clergy leadership our system assumes is simply there. It has meant that St. Peter’s has not been in a position to build back after the pandemic–until now.

What is exciting about the present moment is that we can now move forward in a way that has not been possible for some time. Evidence of this is already visible. New people arriving of all ages, members that we have not seen in some time are returning, repairs are happening to buildings and pipe organ, and, perhaps most tellingly, there is positive energy about charting a path forward benefitting everyone. In the words of the Book of Common Prayer, “things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new” (BCP, 280).

  • Fruitful conversations are taking place with parents about putting children’s programs in place that are not only a key responsibility of ours, but also one of the ways we ensure our faith has a future.

  • Teens are beginning to organize themselves and think up initiatives that they lead.

  • As social challenges mount around us, such as an increasing number of neighbors who lack food, new energy is arriving for our outreach programs about what is possible.

Our wardens, treasurer, and vestry have carefully worked through our budget and we are running a tight ship. They have also developed modest sources of income from our fruitful partnership with Beacon Montessori School and from our solar panels. Most people know that we receive no money from the Diocese of Massachusetts and depend upon our parishioners to pay our bills. The good part of this system is that it gives us a degree of independence to make our own choices, but it also means that what happens at St. Peter’s depends upon us.

The pledges we receive in the fall are how we are able to put together next year’s budget. Now, therefore, is the time for St. Peter’s friends and family to pull together and pledge in such a way that we can build on the present positive momentum, fund our new initiatives, and establish a budget that ensures St. Peter’s is sustainable for decades to come.

If you haven’t pledged to St. Peter’s in the past and you want St. Peter’s to be able to take advantage of the present moment, please do so. It can be in any amount that works for you. Each pledge is heartening and makes a difference.

In the best places, the best things things “bubble up” as it were. St. Peter’s is one of those places. If in thinking about supporting St. Peter’s, you have your own dreams for what is possible here, please reach out to me directly and I would love to talk with you about it.

Faithfully,
