From the Rector's Desk
HOT ENOUGH FOR YOU?
It's hot out there. In case you have not noticed for yourself, every media outlet anxiously wants you to know how hot it is, and how humid, and how long the heat is likely to last, and what steps to take to combat the heat, and what to consume or not consume in the heat...and on and on and on, again and again. Part of all that repetition is certainly a necessary public service, especially for those for whom cooling centers can be a genuine lifeline.
There is, however, the temptation to turn the observation that it's hot out there into a crisis requiring near-histrionic proportions in order to be described, and that each media outlet is convinced that their histrionics will be better than others and thus they will drawn the largest audience and be able to get the highest revenues from advertisers.
Unfortunately, the same approach appears to be infecting our civic dialogue on important societal concerns (and which we actually have some control over, unlike the weather). It seems that the loudest (and sometimes most non-rational) voices are constantly described and the more ordinary daily realities of living are either taken for granted or ignored.
Here's a thought - why not begin each day by simply thanking God for the gift of life itself, and then begin to engage with the challenges and opportunities which we need or want to address that day? Why not experience one another as creatures of a loving God who together have gifts to offer and challenges to face with a spirit of mutual care and compassion? Perhaps the problems we can all identify could be addressed quite differently.
It sure beats hearing one more media report telling us it's hot out there, don't you think?
Keep cool, all!

Memorial Service for Kurt Ward
Kurt Ward (brother of recent vestry member Keith Ward and raised at St. Peter's) died on July 13. He worked for Pan Am Railroad and did not survive an accident in the Deerfield, MA, rail yard. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter's at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 17th. The Rev. David Van Dusen (rector of St. Peter's from 1976-1991 and close friend of the Ward family) will offer the sermon and assist at the service. Notes of condolence may be sent to Keith and Laurie Ward at 306 North Avenue, Weston, MA 02493. May Kurt's soul rest in peace with the Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon him.

Charles Brown expresses his gratitude to St Peter's
In June, St Peter's had another graduation to celebrate when Charles Brown received his college diploma from Boston University as a participant in Partakers' College Behind Bars. This has been a long process for Charles, who is serving a life-sentence at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Norfolk, and is an achievement for him as great as it is for anyone.
Charles' letter expresses astonishing insight, wisdom and resurrection life: it is his incarceration that - in his words - "gave me Charles Brown. It gave me life." Importantly, he invites each of us to remember how vital it is to persevere in the face of all that makes us "stretch and strain, sprint and crawl, laugh and cry" in our journeys through life.
Thank you, Charles, for the gift you have given us in your witness!
Dear Rev. Hall ,
How are you? I am fine. I am still on cloud nine my graduation, it was wonderful to walk up to the podium and receive my degree. I know that I had a smile a mile long. I want everyone at St. Peter's to know by comparison, this is my proudest accomplishment. I can't help looking back on my life, and remembering the men and women from St. Peter's who led me to where I am today.
I give God all the glory and praise for sending the members of St. Peter's into my life. Sir, please let the Church know that they all were my mentors, and I can never forget how they helped me become the person I am today.
God has been directing the events of my life, and you, the men and women of St. Peter's are the instruments. By helping me get into Boston University's Prison Project, my degree gave me a view of what I could become. Thank you all for helping me believe that all things are possible in my life, too.
I am grateful that St. Peter's came alongside and helped me to see my difficulties through the eyes of God. Joseph is just such a person. Although he lived thousands of years ago, his story still speaks to me with great insight into the Lord's purposes.
What I always thought was a curse - prison has in fact turned out to be the greatest gift I've ever been given. It gave me Charles Brown. It gave me life. I know that as a kid, I didn't put a whole lot of emphasis on my schooling, but at this time, I will not trade if for anything.
There are a number of wonderful people from St. Peter's who contributed in countless ways to my education. My gratitude goes out to Rev. Carol, Flora, Doug, Judy, Wes, Mr. Armistead and Robyn. I will always appreciate your love and support. I also want to thank you Rev. Hall, and acknowledge the compassion and encouragement that I consistently received from the Church family of St. Peter's. You all have treated me with great dignity and integrity.
Persevere, my friends, and may the Lord God bless all of you in all your endeavors as you stretch and strain, sprint and crawl, laugh and cry toward the final destiny that He sets before all. As I close this letter, I am reminded of these words from Princess Diana of Wales, "Everyon needs to be valued. Everyone has the potential to give something back." When I am released, I will give back to society by helping wherever help is needed.
Thank you and God bless All.
Peace and love Always
Charles Brown

SUMMER SEASON AT ST. PETER'S
For many of us, summer is a time to take a break from the usual school year patterns and enjoy vacation time, especially on the weekends. However, when you are in town of a Sunday, please remember that our worship and parish life continues throughout the summer, and Sunday services continue to be offered at 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM.
This summer, we welcome two summer staff members. Sarah Larson, who just completed her second year at Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, will be among us for a six-week summer field education experience. Field education is intended to provide students with exposure to the daily patterns of ministry in a specific community and give us as a parish the opportunity to help in the formation of emerging church leaders. Sarah will be involved in various aspects of our parish life, including preaching at the 10:00 service on July 4th and August 8th. She holds a Ph.D. in American History from American University.
Barry Singer returns to provide musical leadership at the 10:00 AM services from June 27th through September 5th. A graduate in Composition from Berklee College of Music, Barry is a vocalist and instrumentalist, including vocal performances with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras. He is also a freelance jazz pianist with the band Firefly, and has extensive experience as a church musician. It is always a joy to welcome Barry among us in the summer season.
Please have a safe and joyful summer, and when in Weston of a weekend, I look forward to joining with you in worship at 8:00 AM or 10:00 AM each Sunday.

Vestry Meeting Recap:
St. Peter's Vestry had another productive meeting this past Tuesday night. Importantly, there was discussion on beginning work on the St. Peter's steeple due to the generous donations of so many parishioners at the 50th Anniversary Celebration. We will have more updates in the weeks and months to come. In addition, the group spent time planning for the summer months and also receiving a briefing on the results of the membership survey. Once all surveys are completed in the coming week, the Vestry will begin to review the results and report back to the parish in the fall. We wish everyone a healthy and happy summer and look forward to seeing you all in church or otherwise sometime soon.

From Marshall Barlett and Family: "This past Sunday, the Bartlett family used the tickets to the Boston Pops Father's Day concert, an item we purchased at the Anniversary Auction. The event was terrific and amazingly all kids sat, mesmerized, for a full 2 hours! Many thanks to St. Peter's and Tom Keery for offering the item at the auction and for giving us some great memories!"
From the group that Stirred it Up!!: "On Friday, June 11, four St. Peter's couples (Marion & John Packs, Lydia & Dave Icke, Katie & Chris Phaneuf, and Anne & Rudy Ruggles) cashed in on their auction item and dined at Barbara Lynch's demonstration kitchen, Stir. We were treated to a delicious dinner, and the evening was full of laughter and good food topped off with fancy donated wine. Although the food itself was delicious, what made the evening even more special was watching two chefs prepare the elaborate meal while entertaining us with funny stories and helpful cooking hints.
All the couples enjoyed the night and toasted St. Peter's! We thank the past and present wardens for donating this item and recommend the experience to other parishioners in the future!"

MISSION
One of the many definitions of mission in the dictionary is, "being sent out with authority to perform a special duty, specifically the sending out of persons by a religious organization."
At the 10:00 AM service this Sunday, we will take a few minutes to commission those who will be going to El Hogar School in Honduras. Their mission is offered in our name as a Christian community striving to serve brothers and sisters in Christ in another place. The authority does not rest with us as isolated individuals, but rather as part of a community which strives, however imperfectly, to respond to God's countless gifts to us and to the call to do what we can to make a difference in the lives of others.
Undoubtedly, those who go to El Hogar will share gifts they have with those whose material needs are great. Undoubtedly, they will offer caring love to the young people with whom they are working.
But it is equally true that those who engage in such a mission typically return with a sense of having received in spirit even more than they are able to offer. My prayer for all those going to El Hogar is for safe travel and all the blessings of joining together for a special time with brothers and sisters in Christ.

We Want Your Input - St. Peter's Survey!
There is a tremendous amount of energy and progress at St. Peter's today, which is evident throughout our ministries and church life. In order to continue to grow and deepen our ministries, St. Peter's Vestry would like to hear directly from you - about what you feel is working best at St. Peter's and what the church could do better. Please participate in our online survey if you have not already. Alternatively, a paper version of the survey is available through the church office. Books, Books and More Books!
Our help in building the library at Suffolk County Jail has been very much appreciated by Marianne Kimball, librarian at the jail, and the detainees and inmates she serves. Marianne notes that even modest attention to their intellectual development - or any sort of academic development, especially as a way of using time productively - make an enormous difference in the way detainees and inmates view themselves and the potential their lives hold.
Thank you to all who have contributed (or plan to contribute!) to our ongoing book drive! You will see boxes outside Pastor Kirkham's office, ready to be filled with reading material of any kind EXCEPT magazines and hard cover books.

From the Rector's Desk
SUMMER IN THE CITY
The end of the public school year is approaching, and the long summer vacation will soon begin. Once upon a time in this country, summer vacation was a time when the school buildings were "vacated" so that large numbers of students could work in the busy summer months on the family farm. That economic necessity is nothing like the factor it once was, and the long summer break from formal education has the unfortunate effect of a measurable loss of academic skills for too many of our young people. It is especially problematic among those in cities, especially those who for reasons of time or money are not able to access summer learning opportunities.
Our diocese offers urban youth an opportunity called the Bishop's Summer Academic and Fun Enrichment (B-SAFE) program, based in several urban neighborhoods, as a way to address the need for summer opportunities. Hundreds of young people participate and a significant number of teenagers are employed as staff. I think it is one of the best programs our diocese offers.
Many congregations work together to provide lunch meals, a field trip and financial support for B-SAFE, and St. Peter's is one of them. This Sunday, we welcome a guest preacher, Ms. Jane Tierney, who is responsible for coordinating the work of the partner churches.
Please note that the loose plate offering this Sunday will be directed to the B-SAFE program.
See you in church!

You will be receiving an email in the next few days inviting you to participate in an online survey. Alternatively, a paper version of the survey is available through the church office. We'll make more announcements in the weeks to come but thank you in advance for your feedback!

The Susan McDaniel Run for Lovelane is June 13th
Susan McDaniel, an avid athlete, parishioner at St. Peter's, actress, and equestrian was a student at Lovelane throughout her two year battle with cancer.
The Run for Love, established in 1996, was dedicated in Susan's memory in 2005.
Today, Run participants carry on Susan's spirit by raising funds for a program she loved and believed in.
Register to run or walk and start you own fund raising page so that your friends can pledge their support!
Runners, walkers, supporters, friends and spectators are all encouraged to join us as we lace up our running shoes in support of a great cause. This professionally timed, USATF sanctioned run has become a big hit over the years and in 2010 we expect over 300 runners to join us. There will be food, music, face painting, prizes, balloons and a clown all waiting for you and your family. What a terrific way to spend a summer Sunday! The kids can enjoy a ½ mile Kid's Fun Run or a Diaper Dash for the extra young athletes in the crowd.
Register to run at active.com and start your own fundraising through Lovelane's First Giving page, collect pledges from your friends and family. All of the proceeds from the Run for Love help to keep Lovelane's very special riders in the saddle by contributing to the cost of the therapeutic riding program and supporting the Susan McDaniel Tuition Assistance Fund.

Interested in Knitting for Newborns at Boston Medical Center?
There are knitting kits in the vestibule for preemie caps and blankets. If you are a beginner, there are needles in some of the kits. The directions are rather simple. The caps and blankets go to the Neo-Natal department of Boston Medical Center. They are always very appreciative of our efforts.
There are new directions for caps (see the book in the vestibule) and blankets (not more than 20"x20"). Please return left over yarn from the blankets. I make patchwork squares for blankets.

ST PETER'S CONGRATULATES CHARLES BROWN ON HIS COLLEGE GRADUATION!
Charles Brown is an inmate at Norfolk/MCI and has, for the past eight years, been a participant in the Partakers "College Behind Bars" program. Partakers seeks to reduce prisoner recidivism through education and civic engagement, and enables prisoners to complete a college education through coursework taught by professors at Boston University.
St. Peter's Outreach Program has sponsored Charles in this long effort of his. He has completed his course work and will graduate on June 16, 2010!
Graduation from college is a major achievement for anyone, under any circumstance. The Outreach Committee is proud of Charles' success and sends along its congratulations!
Summer Volunteer Opportunity!
There are two inner city ministries that can use extra volunteer help during the summer months: St. Francis House (homeless adult men and women, www.stfrancishouse.org) and Bridge Over Troubled Waters (homeless young people between the ages of 14-24, www.bridgeotw.org).
These ministries benefit from Boston-area college students, and many of them have gone home for summer break. The ministries are now short staffed: St. Francis House needs volunteer help with clothing distribution and food preparation. Bridge needs volunteer tutors for the GED program.
Peter Mitsakos, from St Demetrios Church, is a regular volunteer at both places and is offering to drive from Weston into Boston one weekday morning, probably Monday or Tuesday. He will leave Weston Center for Boston at 8:15am, and then leave Boston for Weston Center at 11:45am. SFH and Bridge are two blocks apart, and Peter parks at the Ritz, in between.
If you are interested in volunteering at one of these two places, please contact Peter directly at tpmitsakos@comcast.net, or 781-899-6583.

From the Rector's Desk
ORDINARY TIME
This Sunday is the Second Sunday after Pentecost, and by the time we reach the beginning of Advent season in the fall, we will have observed 25 Sundays which are not part of the Advent - through - Pentecost seasons of the church year. As a group, these are sometimes referred to as Sundays in "ordinary" time. The origin of that term is unclear - it may come from the word "ordo" which may be translated as "calendar," or it may simply be that these Sundays are "ordinary" in the sense of not being part of a "special" season of the church year.
As I thumbed through my date book, I took note of what is already on the schedule during this "ordinary" time. It includes weddings, baptisms, the El Hogar summer mission trip, our B-SAFE week in support of urban youth in the summer, vacation dates, a family reunion, the start of a new academic year, and more. I am sure your list includes many other events as well.
I suppose these are part of the "ordinary" round of lives, and yet aren't they also "special" times of new experiences and new opportunities to choose to be the kind of people God calls us to be? I can't help but observe that many of the most remarkable things about Jesus' ministry among us were revealed in that which was apparently ordinary being made extraordinary.
May your ordinary times to come be made extraordinary!
--Stephen

The Good Shepherd
 |
From the Rector's Desk
THE GOOD SHEPHERD
The Fourth Sunday of Easter (that is, the third Sunday after Easter Day) has long been nicknamed "Good Shepherd" Sunday, because the gospel readings appointed for this Sunday reflect that theme from the gospel of John. The image of Jesus as a caring shepherd has long been artistically popular, and among my most vivid recollections of church during my childhood years are the posters showing Jesus as a shepherd.
It may come as a shock, therefore, to discover that the biblical portrayal of shepherds is typically negative. Shepherds were thought of as unreliable workers, typically intoxicated as the cold night hours surrounded them, and dishonest. The fact that shepherds are called upon to bear witness to Jesus' birth would have been startling to those who first heard it.
To call Jesus the Good Shepherd is to say that, unlike failed human shepherds, Jesus can be trusted to gather us together with compassion and in love. It is only Jesus who will seek out the one lost sheep out of a hundred - anyone else would protect the 99 sheep and write off the one lost sheep as an unfortunate business loss.
If we are to gather people with compassion and in love, it can only be in a way that bears witness to the work of the one Good Shepherd. Our guest preacher this Sunday, the Rev. Rich Kunz, bears witness to God by his leadership of El Hogar. El Hogar School provides God's kind of shepherding for children in need in Honduras, and our parish work teams which have traveled there over the years experience joy in being part of that witness.
We welcome Rich among us this Sunday, and please note that the loose (non-pledge) plate offering this Sunday will help support our parish team traveling to Honduras in July.

From the Rector's Desk
A FIFTIETH CELEBRATION TO REMEMBER
What a special time we had on April 10th as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the consecration of the current St. Peter's Church!
Words of thanks for the ministry of St. Peter's in our Diocese and a gracious blessing by Bishop Tom Shaw; Emcee Fantastic Suzie Reeves guiding us through the evening's agenda; Auctioneers Tom Keery and Janice Corley (who ought to take their show on the road!) drawing out extraordinarily generous bids from the full parish hall; Dave Bradley and Anngie Tyler sharing memories in story and poetry of the journey from the opening of the new church building; and the kind of warm fellowship which delights everyone. All this, and sharing in a delicious meal prepared by a team of parishioners!
There are no adequate words to thank the members of the planning committee, those who donated items to the silent and live auctions, and those who saw to so many tasks to make it all possible. And on top of the celebrations, your generosity raised $40,000 for St. Peter's, even in the midst of a challenging economic time.
As I look forward into the spring, I want to draw your attention to an opportunity to continue the warm enthusiasm of our growth as a diverse community of people - Sunday, May 23rd, the Day of Pentecost. Pentecost is remembered in our worship as the "birthday of the Church," and I hope you will want to be among us in particular on that day. Young people of the parish will be taking many roles in the service, as it is a Youth Sunday meant to recognize and thank our Church School teachers and leadership and our young people for their essential roles in the life of the parish. It is a day of celebration, and I hope you will be there to join us for the 10:00 service and a fellowship time following.

Vestry
The Vestry had another productive meeting this past Tuesday evening. Something we are reinstituting this year is a monthly visit by one of St. Peter's ministries and this month we were very fortunate to have the Church School and Youth teams with us. There was a robust discussion on many topics, notably updating the curriculum, drawing in more new teachers, and introducing new events.
In addition to these topics, the Vestry covered updates on our 3 focus areas for the year - Growing our Membership, Deepening our Ministries and Community, and Strengthening our Operations. Central to all of these topics was the incredible St. Peter's Birthday Celebration held on April 10th which served as a tremendous community-building event and source of approximately $40,000 for the parish. We are all incredibly grateful to the organizing committee and all of you for your participation and look forward to seeing you all at church soon.
